ITHACA, N.Y. –– Crews are working to restore water service to two localities after two separate water main breaks Wednesday.

According to the Department of Public Works, there have been water main breaks at the intersection of S. Geneva and Wood Streets and on Woodcrest  Street.

The Wood Street break is apparently the result of erosion and the cause of the Woodcrest break is still uncertain.

“There’s really nothing the city can do to prevent them,” said Scott Gibson, the acting stormwater management officer. “We ask for (resident’s) patience, it’s an old system and we have water mains that date back to the 1850s.”

Crew’s work repairing the ruptured water mains and restoring water service should wrap up by 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Traffic will continue to be diverted around the repair area until the work is finished.

For those experiencing service outages are advised to run cold water when service is restored until cloudiness or brown water runs clear.
