ITHACA, N.Y. –– Those who regularly travel down Route 13 may have noticed that the iconic Sciencenter “tippy” sign has been restored to its former tipping glory.
The old “tippy” sign was taken down due to damage by age and weather which caused it to stand stationary. But now, local company DataFlow has installed a new version (Tippy 2.0 if you will) for the Sciencenter with updated tipping mechanisms.
“Thirty years ago a volunteer designed and built the tippy sign. That design and build held up for 30 years! And even after all that time when Dataflow replaced the sign they only needed to update and replace the worn-out hardware and the artwork,” Director of Exhibits and Facilities Adrienne Testa said.
While the sign’s design will look familiar to many, it actually features a new palette of colors that were picked out by the Sciencenter staff. The project was made possible in part by a grant from the Tompkins County Tourism Program.
Executive Director Michelle Kortenaar also shared her excitement regarding the new sign. “I hear stories all the time about children pointing to our Tippy Sign and getting excited about a visit. I am so glad that our iconic sign is updated and once again tipping,” she said.
For those looking to see the new sign in action all you have to do is drive by the intersection of Route 13 and 1st Street.
For those interested in actually visiting the Sciencenter, they are currently open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. General admission is $8 (for ages 2 through 64), $7 for seniors (65+), and free to members and toddlers under 2.
