(Update, 10 a.m.—NYSEG and Cornell University Police Department have lifted the travel restrictions around East Hill, as of 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

ITHACA, N.Y. ––A gas leak has closed certain streets in the Collegetown area, with NYSEG telling the Cornell University community in a message to avoid the area.

NYSEG’s message states that the leak is centered on Mitchell Street at a substation, and was sent at 8:39 p.m. It is unknown when service will be restored.

“Avoid traveling Pine Tree Road, Mitchell Street, Ellis Hollow between Pine Tree and Hungerford Hill Road, and East Hill Plaza,” said the message. “Avoid the area at this time.”

A follow-up message from the Cornell University Police Department said that Ithaca Fire Department and NYSEG crews are in the area for repairs to the leak, and to use caution when traveling through East Hill Plaza or on Mitchell Street or Pine Tree Road.

The area apparently in question is shown below, though specifics are not quite clear from NYSEG yet. More will be added once information is provided or the leak is resolved.
