ITHACA, N.Y. –– More than 2,700 people were left without power on Ithaca’s West End Sunday after a tree downed power lines. The outage affected not only private residences but also restaurants and traffic lights.
According to a New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) spokesperson, the outage yesterday was caused by “a tree that fell on a transmission line as a result of the recent storms and softened soil conditions.”
Power was restored after approximately an hour.
Ithaca has been bombarded by wet weather and severe storms for several weeks now, wreaking havoc on multiple power lines –– in early July more than 600 customers were left without power throughout downtown.
And according to the National Weather Service out of Binghamton, the damage as a result of the rain could continue “with soils still very wet from recent bouts of rain, isolated flooding will be possible,” the weekly forecast states.
The forecast continues, stating “locations that already experienced flooding in recent days, will be more vulnerable to additional rainfall.”
