ITHACA, N.Y. –– A flash flood warning is in effect from 5 p.m. this afternoon through Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a “Flash Flood Watch” for much of Central New York including Cortland, Madison, Northern Oneida, Onondaga, Schuyler, Seneca, Southern Cayuga, Southern Oneida, Steuben, Tompkins and Yates counties.

Forecasters have predicted “scattered heavy rain showers and thunderstorms” as remnants of Tropical Storm Fred that spread throughout much of southern Appalachia earlier this week.

Localized rainfall amounts are expected to be over five inches –– possibly leading to flash flooding as heavy rainfall causes rapid rises on creeks and streams. Residents should continue to monitor local forecasts and be cautious driving or walking during the wet weather.
