ITHACA, N.Y. –– Construction crews working at the intersection of Elmira Road and Commercial Ave caused a gas leak Monday afternoon that shut down a portion of the road and temporarily blocked access to the Tompkins Recycling and Solid Waste Center for around an hour.

According to the Ithaca Fire Department, “just before 1:00 p.m. Monday, a construction crew working at the intersection of Elmira Road and Commercial Ave, struck a natural gas line, releasing high-pressure gas.”

IFD and the Ithaca Police Department responded to the area to “control traffic and to assist New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) so they could make the necessary repairs to remove the hazard.”

NYSEG was able to patch the broken pipe and the area was reopened with no injuries.
