ITHACA, N.Y.—The portion of the Cayuga Waterfront Trail located between the Farmers’ Market and Willow Avenue near the Ithaca Area Wastewater Treatment Plant (IAWWTF) will be closed beginning Friday, Dec. 3, with an unclear reopening date.
Detour signs will be posted and direct trail users to cross Route 13 on Dey Street, follow W. Lincoln Street to the Cascadilla Creek footbridge, left onto the path behind the Sciencenter onto Franklin Street to Third Street, then back across Route 13 to continue on to the Farmers Market. Detour signs will be posted going both directions for clarity.
The reason for this closure is a New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) project in partnership and under the guidance of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). This project entails remedial construction by contract at the former manufactured gas plant (MGP) site which was previously located where the water treatment plant is currently.
This remedial work includes subsurface non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) migration barrier wall installation. The barrier wall is made up of steel sheet piles driven approximately 40 feet into the ground along the north side of the former MGP and wells for NAPL monitoring and recovery.
