ITHACA, N.Y.—Ithaca police published a batch of press releases related to three unrelated incidents in the City of Ithaca that took place throughout Friday.
Dispute on Cherry Street
Around 3 a.m. on Sept. 2, police responded to a report of a domestic dispute in the 100 block of Cherry Street. Officers on the scene attempted to interview the involved parties and were informed that the suspect may be in possession of a handgun. During the investigation, police said that they observed the suspect attempting to conceal an item near his waistband before fleeing on foot.
A perimeter was set up with the assistance of other local law enforcement agencies, and a K9 unit located a loaded handgun, though the suspect was not found.
Cherry and Taber Streets and the nearby portion of Cecil A. Malone Drive were temporarily restricted during this search, and a SIREN alert was sent out.
The suspect’s name is not being released at this time, though charges relative to the original incident and the possession of the firearm are pending.
Shots fired on Plain Street
Around 12:30 p.m. Friday, police responded to a shots fired report in the 100 block of North Plain Street, near the intersection with West Seneca Street.
Upon arrival, police said they were told by witnesses that two people had an altercation and that one of them pulled out a handgun and fired it in the direction of the other person. Several shell casings were found at the scene, but the suspect had fled and there were no victims found.
Mental health incident
Around 9:30 a.m. Friday, police responded to a report of a person threatening others with a knife on the Commons. Upon arrival, police said they determined that the person was having a mental health crisis.
Police said the person was “throwing objects at them and kicking them” when they tried to bring him into custody, before he fled to his residence. A taser was used multiple times to subdue the person, who was then taken into custody.
