WASHINGTON, D.C.—Newly elected Congressman Marc Molinaro (R-NY19) has officially called for his much-maligned House of Representatives colleague George Santos to step down from Congress.

Santos, a Republican, has been caught in a maelstrom of controversy since it was uncovered that most of his history and background that he stated during his Congressional campaign were fake. While the margin of advantage for Republicans in the House of Representatives is very slim, gradually other GOP members have been calling for Santos to resign in the wake of the revelations.

“George Santos’s dishonesty has eroded his ability to represent his neighbors and serve in Congress,” Molinaro said in a statement to The Ithaca Voice. “I don’t see how he can continue.”

Santos lied both to voters and on his Congressional resume to Republican officials about seemingly everything, including education, job history, whether his mother died in the Sept. 11th attacks, whether or not he’s Jewish, etc. He may have even desecrated the sanctity of the Baruch College men’s volleyball program.

Molinaro, who was elected in November 2022 to represent New York’s 19th Congressional District which includes all of Tompkins County, made additional comments to CNN’s Manu Raju Thursday. There are now seven House Republicans calling for Santos to step down, though GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, another Republican representative from New York, has not joined them.
