ITHACA, N.Y.—At approximately 10:29 a.m. on Feb. 11, deputies from the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office responded to Ling Ling Garden, at 331 Pine Tree Road in the Town of Ithaca, for a reported burglary.

Employees had arrived at the restaurant to find it burglarized overnight, and upon review of surveillance footage, deputies observed a white man break into the back door by drilling out the door lock before entering the business and stealing cash from the register.

Deputies canvassed the neighborhood and also observed the same man trying to break into the East Hill Car Wash, located at 383 Pine Tree Road.

With assistance from Ithaca Police Department officers, sheriff’s deputies were able to locate the suspect’s vehicle on North Meadow Street and apprehend the suspect, identified as as 32-year-old James R. Kastenhuber of Ithaca.

Kastenhuber was charged with burglary in the third degree, attempted burglary in the third degree and criminal possession of burglar tools.

Kastenhuber was held for centralized arraignment and remanded to the Tompkins County Jail.
