ITHACA, N.Y.—Downtown Ithaca’s most prominent Mexican restaurant is moving about 50 feet. Viva Taqueria announced Thursday that it will shift from its current spot at the corner of State Street and Aurora Street to a nearby location at the corner of the Commons.

Viva will move into the former Pasta Vitto space after Pasta Vitto’s closing. Both businesses are owned by Pete and Ursula Browning, who announced the move. The official move date was not announced but will be “later this spring.”

“We will miss the sunny side of the street,” the owners wrote in an announcement. “Moving allows us to have room to grow. We are excited for the future in our new location so we can continue to serve fresh healthy Mexican food and margaritas in downtown Ithaca.”

The taqueria seems to have survived the COVID-19 pandemic well enough, but the Brownings acknowledged that “the restaurant industry has evolved and Viva must also.”

The restaurant, which opened in 1995, is open on Tuesday-Thursday from 12-8 p.m. and 12-9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
