Community individuals and organizations are invited to join the new Community Quiltmaking Center for a Grand Opening Celebration on Sunday, April 23, from 1:00 to 5:00 pm, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, remarks, and honoring founder Peggy Dunlop at 2:00 pm.  The Community Quiltmaking Center is launching in collaboration with FingerLakes ReUse at the ReUse MegaCenter in Triphammer Marketplace at 2255 N. Triphammer Road, in Ithaca, NY.

Come to see and celebrate the Community Quiltmaking Center’s launch to the community while enjoying quilts on display, including class quilt samples, the first Wrap Up and Read Quilts, and even quilts made from reused clothing.

During the event, aspiring quiltmakers can sign up for free beginning classes and workshops complete with fabric, times for open sewing and quiltmaking, learning to sew, sewing machine how-tos, and quiltmaking demos, and even be matched with a quiltmaking mentor.

Experienced quiltmakers and community members can also sign up to share a skill and get involved. They can also learn more about fabric grants, and go home with free fabric for making quilts for community good,  free patterns, and some new quiltmaking friends.

Important to note! The Community Quiltmaking Center is not a quilt shop – it is a quilt center for everyone– to share skills and provide space and resources at no cost in support of the mission “to open the door to quiltmaking for all, regardless of personal resources.” With this special focus on the basics and beginners the new Community Quiltmaking Center CQ) will connect aspiring quiltmakers with experienced quiltmakers and all of the resources they need to succeed in their first quiltmaking endeavors. In addition, CQC is dedicated to supporting individuals and organizations across Tompkins County who are interested in “quiltmaking for community good,” with a special focus on reuse and sustainability.

Dedicated volunteers have spent hundreds of hours getting the space and fabric ready to share with the community and now are set to launch this unique community collaboration with Finger Lakes ReUse and other community partners. Everyone is invited to be part of it.
