The Ithaca High School Green Outdoor Adventure Team will host the second annual IHS Climate Action Expo on Sunday, May 21, from 1-5 p.m. in the IHS Welcome Center, 1401 N. Cayuga St. 

The expo will feature displays, presentations, and discussions about addressing climate change through a variety of individual, community, and global approaches. Attendees will have the opportunity to watch the annual Junior Solar Sprint Challenge, sponsored by the IHS Technology and Engineering Department, visit the Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Tiny PowerHouse, view one of TCAT’s new electric buses, and learn about a variety of approaches to decarbonizing our homes and communities and transitioning to more sustainable ways of living. 

“Ithaca High School is proud to host the inaugural IHS Climate Action Expo,” principal Jason Trumble said. “Students and staff members have collaborated on organizing an event aimed at informing attendees about the realities of the climate crisis and equipping them with a range of tools to address it.” 

IHS Green Outdoor Adventure Team’s guiding principle is to reimagine our future, specifically with respect to the environment, while accounting for inequities. 

Student event co-founders Eden Lewis and Kylie Golden-Appleton assert that, “Historically, Ithacans have been focused on very individual and short-term solutions to the climate crisis, when in reality, climate change is a global issue that predominantly affects communities of color and those in the Global South. We can not address the climate crisis without addressing systems of oppression, including colonization, borders, and white supremacy, and how they shape our society. The IHS Climate Action Expo will showcase ways in which individual efforts can combine into collaborative action.” 

The IHS Climate Action Expo would not be possible without the collaboration and participation of many local organizations, clubs, and businesses that are focused on social justice, the environment, and educating the community about sustainable practices. Partners include the Ithaca City School District/Ithaca High School, Ithaca Green New Deal, the Sunrise Movement, Supporting Women Impacting Society (SWIS) club, Bike Walk Tompkins, TCAT, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Gil’s Honeybees, the History Center in Tompkins County, Earthaca, LaMorte Electric, Tetra Tech, Beauty of Color Club, Cayuga Lake Watershed Network, Ecolectro, Inc., Finger Lakes ReUse and Ithaca Bikeshare.
