ITHACA, N.Y.—Despite a week of hazy skies and smoke-filled air, the New York State Special Olympics Summer Games simply moved inside and went about its way this weekend.
The events were split between Ithaca College, Ithaca High School and a bowling event held outside the county. Athletes participated in gymnastics, basketball, track and field, weightlifting and more, preceded by an opening ceremony that was forced indoors because of the air quality concerns.
Hundreds of participants converged on Ithaca for the second year in a row, with Ithaca slated to host another Summer Games next year around this time.
