Update (10:25 a.m., Oct. 16): Tompkins County Sheriff Derek Osborne said the driver of the car will not be cited in the crash. Osborne said the investigation determined the person operating the motorized skateboard was at fault for the fatal wreck.

Original Story (Oct. 15):

LANSING, N.Y.—A crash involving a car and a motorized skateboard on Friday evening left one person dead, according to the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency personnel and police were called to a crash in the area of Warren Road and Hillcrest Road in Lansing around 7 p.m. Friday evening, according to Sheriff Derek Osborne.

Deputies and medical personnel found an unconscious man at the scene who was not breathing. Life-saving measures were commenced and the man was transported to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead there. Osborne said the victim’s identity was being withheld while his family was being notified.

The investigation so far has found that the victim was traveling north on Warren Road, driving a motorized skateboard. A car traveling the same direction struck the motorized skateboard from behind, according to Osborne, who said the driver of the car stopped to call for help and has cooperated with the investigation.

Osborne did not say if the driver of the car would be facing charges or whether any tickets would be issued. The Ithaca Voice has reached out for clarification.

State police, the Lansing Fire Department and Bangs Ambulance all responded to the scene.
