ITHACA, N.Y. — A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for a large swath of central New York and Pennsylvania, including Tompkins County, from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service issued the watch Wednesday afternoon. Local forecasts call for intermittent thunderstorms for the next hour or two before giving way to dry weather and clouds later Wednesday night.

The watch includes 13 counties in New York: Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins and Yates, along with five counties in north Pennsylvania.

The National Weather Service’s radar shows rain heading towards the area from the southwest, with one patch likely to hit Tompkins County around 4:30 or 5 p.m., with more rain possible depending on the path of the storm.
