ITHACA, N.Y. – There are some hardy locals who bike to work in all weather, but last Friday morning’s chilly rain was not ideal for celebrating National Bike to Work and School Day. After planned festivities were canceled last week, Bike Walk Tompkins has announced breakfast stations will be open for bicyclists on Wednesday, May 22.

Free coffee, baked goods and bananas will be available curbside at Court and Tioga Streets in Downtown Ithaca, Cayuga and Farm Streets in Fall Creek, and Triphammer and Graham Roads in Lansing starting at 7 a.m. and ending around 10 a.m. or when the coffee runs dry.

The stations are hosted by Bike Walk Tompkins and Ithaca Carshare, the YMCA of Ithaca and Tompkins County, and Lime, the transit-sharing company known for the LimeBikes around the city.

Information about local bike routes, shops and transportation advocacy organizations will be available, along with gear raffles.

The event page invites cycling veterans and newcomers to come out for a morning bite. “Come on out whether you bicycle almost everyday, or once or twice a month or it’s your first time. Don’t have a bike yet? Borrow one. Or get a bikeshare bike… Just get rolling! See ya there!”

Bike Walk Tompkins surveyed a sample of 300 locals in 2018 and found more than half had ridden a bike at least once in the past year, including about 20% of respondents who rode a bike at least weekly during warm months.
