ITHACA, N.Y. — A man was killed after his vehicle crashed into Six Mile Creek on Saturday.

Emergency responders from the Ithaca Police Department, Ithaca Fire Department and Bangs Ambulance responded to the area of South Fulton Street and West Clinton Street around 6:40 p.m. Saturday for a report of a car that had crashed into the creek and landed on its roof.

When officers arrived, they said they found a bystander who was trying to hold the driver’s head above water as his vehicle was partially submerged in the water. Police and firefighters had to force open the door to get the man out. He was transported to Cayuga Medical Center but was later pronounced dead after resuscitative measures failed, police said in a news release.

There was a passenger in the vehicle who was uninjured as well as a dog that ran off when it was extricated from the vehicle.

The frightened dog ran off south on Meadow Street and has not been located yet, police said. It was a small to medium light brown-colored mixed breed female dog named Annie. She was wearing a soft adjustable collar with unknown tags.
