ITHACA, N.Y. — The city is auctioning off 11 abandoned vehicles at local tow lots on the morning of May 3.

Nine cars, an electric scooter and a motorcycle will be available for the public to purchase with cash, cashier’s check or certified check, in accordance with the state’s “abandoned vehicles” law.

The law considers cars left unattended for more than 24 hours on any highway or other public place on which parking is illegal, though the length of allowable time changes for different circumstances.

If the vehicle is without license plates when authorities determine it was abandoned, and the last owner cannot be determined, local authorities like the Ithaca Police Department (IPD) gain ownership.

The first sale is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. on May 3 at Ryan’s Towing Service, located at 218 Elmira Rd. in Ithaca. A 1995 Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a NAN Robot electric scooter, which was not abandoned but is being sold by IPD, will be available.

At 10:00 a.m., at Finger Lakes Wrecker Service at 154 Cecil Malone Dr. in Ithaca, the following cars will be available for purchase:

  • 2003 Acura TL
  • 2003 Honda Accord
  • 2017 Kia Sportage
  • 2016 Chrysler Town and Country

The last sale, scheduled for 10:30 a.m., will take place at Charlie’s Towing, located at 215 5th St. in Ithaca. The following cars will be available:

  • 2008 Honda CRV
  • 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander
  • 2007 Honda Odyssey
  • 2008 Chevrolet Impala
  • 2014 Nissan Maxima
