ENFIELD , N.Y. — Multiple agencies responded to reports of a fire on Applegate Road Saturday afternoon that New York State Police say killed one.

At approximately 12:40 p.m., New York State Police responded to a report of a fire at 244 North Applegate Road in the town of Enfield. A neighbor called 911 but did not know if anyone was inside.

Troopers and fire personnel were dispatched to the home. The first trooper that arrived on the scene observed heavy flames and smoke coming from the residence. The trooper attempted to enter the residence but could not enter safely, according to state police.

Enfield Fire Department quickly arrived to the scene and immediately began to battle the blaze. 

72-year-old Helen L. Freelove was later located deceased inside the home.

Trumansburg Fire Company, Mecklenburg Fire Company, Newfield Fire Company, and Ithaca Fire Department provided mutual aid, according to a release from Enfield Fire Chief Roger Lauper.

Investigators from the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and the New York State Police Forensic Identification Unit were on scene. Troopers were assisted by New York State Park Police, Trumansburg Village Police and New York State Environmental Conservation Police.

Freelove was taken to Lourdes Hospital where an autopsy will be performed.

At this time, no determination has been made about the cause of the fire and it remains an open investigation.
