ITHACA, N.Y. –– On Saturday, Dec. 28 at 4:00 p.m., the Southside Community Center will host its annual Kwanzaa celebration.
The celebration is an African-American holiday that honors African heritage and Black people –– past, present and future. Created by Dr. Maulana Keranga in 1966, Kwanzaa is a week-long annual celebration held in the United States and other nations of the African diaspora that is observed and guided by seven principles from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1.
The educational themes for this year’s celebration at Southside Community Center include:
Black Joy, Financial Freedom, Land & Liberation
Black Joy is a concept that encourages us to name and interrupt the prevalence of anti-Black racism, by recognizing the beauty, boldness, and brilliance of Black people- past, present, and future.
Financial Freedom is a goal that encourages us to reflect on our relationship with money, access local resources, and make smart choices to help us build sustainable futures.
Land & Liberation is a commitment to learning about the craft and experiences of Black farmers and the ways in which our concern and knowledge of agriculture is essential to long-lasting freedom.
Everyone is welcome to the Southside Community Center Kwanzaa celebration of family, community, culture, and education. Southside Community Center is located at 305 S Plain St, Ithaca.
