ITHACA, N.Y.—The Ithaca Fire Department has reported no injuries after a large fire that took place at the homeless encampment often called “the Jungle” Saturday afternoon.

Ithaca Fire Department spokesperson Thomas Basher said that while there were no injuries, the encampment where the fire was located was destroyed.

Fires in the encampment are common, he said. Basher did not mention if there has been a determined cause of the fire.

A Swift alert was sent out to local residents telling them to avoid the area behind the Walmart/Burger King in Ithaca around 4:15 p.m. on Saturday. A source said the resident of the encampment was being placed in a hotel for a few days.
