ITHACA, NY – On Saturday, June 18th, 2016 from 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM, the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office will be performing child car seat safety checks at Monro Muffler on Triphammer Road.

This event is being held in order to ensure the safety of the youth of Tompkins County. Certified Law Enforcement will be performing car seat checks and installing car seats as needed. Those people that need a car seat will be provided one, but if they already have a car seat they can get it checked to ensure that it is safely in their primary vehicle.

We ask that only the primary care givers request seats; as our stock is limited. The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office is happy to check any and all seats for any vehicle.

Sheriff Lansing says, “This program is vital in ensuring that the youth of Tompkins County are safe. Getting your car seat checked could mean the difference between an accident and a fatal accident.”

The Child Passenger Safety Program is grant funded through the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. The goal of the grant is to increase the proper use and installation of child safety seats in New York State.

Typically, the Sheriff’s Office holds monthly car seat events, by appointment, but this event is serving as a large scale event that will not be requiring an appointment. The grant money that is provided is given once a year to purchase car seats; however, once the grant money has been depleted the program relies solely on donations. This event will be on a first come first serve basis.

The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office is happy to provide this service to the community and looks forward to seeing members of the community at the event.
