Update: Police said a man who caused a crash on Route 79 in Enfield was under the influence of drugs when he slammed into a utility pole early Thursday morning.
The crashed closed a portion of the highway — 1800 block of Mecklenburg Road — the for about eight hours as crews worked to restore power to nearly 1,000 homes effected by the crash.
No injuries were reported at the scene.
Zachary D. Horn, 23, of Enfield, was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and failure to use designated lane.
He was issued an appearance ticket and scheduled to appear in the Enfield town court Nov. 21.
Update: Route 79 was reopened around 12:30 p.m.
Update at 11:45 a.m. — A dispatcher said the road might be open by 1 p.m.
ENFIELD, N.Y. — An early morning crash on Route 79 has closed the highway in both directions, leaving hundreds of people without power Thursday morning.
The crash happened around 4:20 a.m. near North Applegate and South Van Dorn roads. A Tompkins County 911 dispatcher said a vehicle “severed” a utility pole, downing power lines. No injuries were reported.
The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, NYSEG and Enfield Fire And Rescue are currently at the scene.
NYSEG is reporting 960 power outages in the county as of about 8:3o a.m.
The dispatcher said there is not an estimated time for the road to reopen, as of about 8:30 a.m.
